Week 5: Academic Writing

Now, AI has gradually become an indispensable tool in each individual’s school and working life. However, it is difficult to determine exactly how much AI is too much. In my opinion, this will largely depend on each person’s intended use. For example, when using AI for learning purposes, I feel it is enough for students to see them as supporting tools, helping them understand the lesson more easily. However, if you use AI just to write out answers and submit them to pass, then that is already a distorted use of AI. This is probably the same for professional lives. We should use AI to understand the questions we are asking, not just simply to solve them. Therefore, I feel like we can’t know how much is enough for AI, and let’s just consider it a support tool.

When we consider them as support tools, it also means that we should not depend on them too much. As Tang et al. mentioned in the article, everyone using AI can encounter artificial hallucination when they receive a lot of information, but it is not entirely accurate. We have mentioned in our class sessions that we should always check the information carefully to avoid making mistakes from AI. Overall, what I mean by this post is that no one is stopping us from using AI, but we need to have the right awareness about it and when to use it properly.

Week 4 – Creative AI

This week, our class was exposed to two interesting readings about creativity and AI. The definition of creativity depends on each person’s perspective. From my own perspective, creativity should be something new from a person’s imagination. It can be based and built on existing materials, but it shows the uniqueness of an individual about a specific topic. Today, I tried prompting to AI (DeepSeek) to ask it to compose a poem with the theme based on its thoughts, and this was the result:

In the beginning, I was pretty surprised by how this poem looked like. Even though it doesn’t rhyme that much, it also has a certain meaning. The way DeepSeek used “library” as a metaphor for human thoughts is quite interesting. I was a little bit confused when I read the poem in the beginning, but overall, this was quite an experience for me since this is the first time I tried this type of prompt. In my opinion, the creativity of AI can be used as a supporter for humans to develop the process. As Arriagada wrote in the reading, “According to Hong, some individuals even claim that AI cannot achieve a creative performance on the same level as humans”. I quite agree with that idea since AI is created by humans, and the information it contains is mostly gathered from our existing information. However, I believe AI can develop more and more in the future with its potential. Therefore, I am looking forward to seeing more materials that we gonna learn about AI in upcoming sessions!

Prompting LLMs – Nguyen Bao Lam Do

A helpful prompting tip that I’ve learned from my own experience is to read the information you provide carefully and ask the AI clear questions. One time, while using ChatGPT to ask for a review of a movie I had seen as the director of the movie, the AI gave information about the characters in the movie, but the storyline was not the same as the movie I’ve watched. Then, when I rephrased the question without giving clear information for it like “Are you sure about that detail?”, it immediately responded, “Sorry for that misinformation, let me fix it for you”. After revision, the information given was correct. However, I wanted to test how AI received the information, so I asked again, “I thought this scene should be like this, no?”. It confirmed that the initial answer given was correct and ignored the correct information answered later. Since it’s been a while, I can’t find it in the chat history with AI.

I have learned my lesson every time I use ChatGPT to ask questions. You want to make sure that you specify your question and look through your materials clearly to prevent unnecessary errors. As we have read in the reading, “An LLM can always produce factual inaccuracies, just like a human” (White et al., 2023). So don’t rely too much on AI to answer everything for you.

Week 2: AI Ethics [Blog Post]

While finding materials for my group’s research, I came across an interesting article titled “From Concerns to Benefits: A Comprehensive Study of ChatGPT Usage in Education.” The paper provides me with surprising insights about the self-learning capabilities of AI Chatbots. The author highlights that ChatGPT’s self-learning features significantly improve students’ ability to acquire and apply knowledge, which means that as students interact with ChatGPT, the AI can adapt and improve its responses over time, providing a more personalized and efficient learning experience. By giving personalized academic support, this learning feature has the potential to transform traditional methods of learning.

For example, whenever I try to use AI to discuss a topic, I always tend to create a conversation like talking to a real person. There will be greetings, or even thanks when the AI gives answers. I try this because I always have a hunch that when I talk closely with AI, the quality of the discussions will be more positive with higher quality as well as creating a habit of talking for myself. That is something I found out which was quite interesting in my progress of learning more about AI.

Nguyen Bao Lam Do – Introductions

Hello everyone, my full name is Nguyen Bao Lam Do but people usually call me Lam. I’m a senior at the College of Wooster and my major is Global Media & Digital Studies. I like basketball, both watching and playing. I also enjoy lifting and playing video games. I have a passion for K-pop and K-drama. I’m taking this class to answer questions I have about AI and learn how to use it more effectively.

In my opinion, AI plays an important role in our lives today because I am witnessing a world where people use it for many different purposes from studying to working. Furthermore, it can also be an entertainment tool for many people to talk or create a lot of content with pictures and videos.

I feel like this is a picture that could represent myself. I am a person who enjoys looking at the sky and taking pictures of it. I feel my lifestyle inside those pictures, always peaceful and passing slowly.
